I was actually shocked when I heard what Mike Dillard had to say in a recent interview, Mike came right out and said that he was scared of the phone when he was first starting out in network marketing. Can you image the founder of Attraction Marketing, Mike Dillard being fearful to speak to people on the phone. Well I guess in Mike’s earlier days he had a conflict going on within him that many of you may experience when being involved in a network marketing business. He was dealing with the conflict between what his goals were and what he was doing to achieve his goals. You may see network marketing as this as an escape to exit Corporate America and the dreaded job that you might be in right now, but you may not yet have the drive or have found a place to get the right training to actually find the success that you know is just waiting for you. You see Mike always had the dream of being an entrepreneur and enjoying the freedoms that independence brings, but because he was engaged in more procrastination than getting into action his dreams were put on hold. As Mike began to realize this, he realized he had to do something about this. Mike did get over his fears and his procrastination. It was about four years before Mike got over this but how he is enjoying being a successful entrepreneur and a person who is always willing to help others learn the skills to succeed in the network marketing industry.
So many people see Mike Dillard as this visionary man who has has found success both in network marketing and on the internet but in order for Mike to stop being afraid of the phone he had to do something about it. What he did was he actually took on a corporate job many years ago where he would have to make 300 cold calls a day. This definitely cured him of his fear of calling people. This was a turning point for Mike but he also realized that he had to keep on improving his knowledge in order to live his dream. He quickly acknowledges that what he learned in this experience would also have to be applied for other challenges he would face in his network marketing career.
Mike realized that if you want to be successful you have to keep on taking on more challenges. He had the foresight to realize that Network Marketing was about marketing and people so he studied these subjects. He studied all the marketing greats and realized he needed to talk to people who were already looking for what he had. So he targeted genealogy list, knowing that his target market was network marketing people. He started doing this and while calling his first 300 plus network marketers he acknowledged that there way no way he would spend the rest of his life calling genealogy list. So he decided to change his approach and wondered – how can I get people to call me? If he could just find 5 to 10 people per day to call him instead of him chasing them that would be the answer.
Mike thought the internet may be the answer. He began to learn about capture pages and writing good ad copy. He also realized that he had to offering value to others if he wanted to reach his goal of attracting 5 to 10 people per day. This was the beginning of what is now know as Magnetic Sponsoring. As he applied these principles he really started to find a system that worked for him and began to put it into a book. This book was mostly for the use of his team in his primary network marketing company but we all know the success that came out at what is now known as Attraction Marketing
This was huge for Mike and as he began to grow a huge downline he realized that the product you are marketing really doesn’t matter, but instead it’s really all about you and your posture. People will join you in your business because they perceive value from you and they feel that you can teach them to be successful . Mike talks about posture and to never giving your power away. He also says that when you are on the phone you should have the right posture and have the attitude of a champion, instead of being needy to have someone join you in your business. Using the phone is a must if you want success in network marketing. He went on to say that although we may have may have many internet marketing skills all that really doesn’t work unless you pick up the phone and contact people and talk with them. Network marketing is a people business and you have to call people to be successful. There’s not getting around it! It’s about marketing and it’s about people. You must take on the role of being a leader in your field and learn all you need to learn to be a success.
It’s important to find and learn from a leader until you can step into the role of the leader. It is tragic in our world economy with people getting laid off and so many are looking for alternative ways to supplement their incomes, you as a network marketer has the greatest opportunity to capitalize on this. This is why if you want to be successful in network marketing you have to step into the role of a leader so people will want to work with you. You will see that as people start to follow you, you will want to get on the phone and talk to them. Mike Dillard has shared so much with us over the years but there are 3 main things to learn in network marketing – marketing – you need to learn how to become proficient at marketing, choosing to become a leader, and getting on the phone and talking to people. You have to choose to grow. Mike Dillard decided to learn all he could to be successful and so can you. Realize that you have to do whatever it takes. Learn the skills, become that leader and learn how to use attraction marketing and attract the right people to you and find the success in network marketing The Business of the 21st Century, that you deserve.
